TREATMENT OF SYSTEMIC LUPUS ERYTHEMATOSIS (SLE) WITH CHINESE HERBS

Lupus is an autoimmune disease involving antibodies that attack connective tissue. The disease is estimated to affect nearly 1 million Americans, primarily affecting women and arising mainly between the ages of 20-40. In China, lupus is even more prevalent than in the West, affecting about 5 million people. The principal disease form is a systemic one (systemic lupus erythematosis; SLE), which is the subject of this article, though a more circumscribed form, discoid lupus, sometimes occurs. The systemic disease includes production of antinuclear antibodies (ANA; mainly targeting the nucleic acid guanosine), generation of circulating immune complexes, and activation of the complement system. Most cases of lupus are mild; however, in some severe cases, untreated lupus can be fatal as it progresses from attack of skin and joints to internal organs, including lung, heart, and kidneys (with renal disease being the primary concern). Lupus mainly appears as a series of flare-ups, with intervening periods of little or no disease manifestation. Triggers for the flare-ups include emotional distress and ultraviolet light exposure; infections may also serve as triggers.

Modern medical treatment involves immunosuppressive strategies, mainly the use of corticosteroids such as prednisone, which are given during periods of flare-ups, but may also be given persistently for those who have experienced frequent flare-ups. Even with effective treatment, which reduces symptoms and prolongs life, the combination of drug side effects and continued low-level manifestation of the disease can cause serious impairment and premature death. New disease management strategies include cyclophosphamide, methotrexate, antimalarials, hormonal treatment (e.g., DHEA), and antihormonal therapy (e.g., the antiprolactin agent bromocriptine).

Antimalarial therapy has a long and successful track record in the management of patients with mild SLE, especially for patients who manifest cutaneous symptoms (it is usually effective for discoid lupus, which is characterized by cutaneous symptoms). Medium to long-term use of hydroxychloroquine, alone or in combination with mepacrine, ameliorates lupus and may reduce the relapse rate. The dose of corticosteroids given for lupus patients may be reduced when antimalarials are used, and the side effect profile of these antimalarials is quite limited (though overdosing can cause significant reactions). Antimalarials have certain beneficial effects on lipid and glucose metabolism as well as having weak anticoagulant activity. One of the main Chinese herb therapies for lupus is the antimalarial herb ching-hao (qinghao, Artemisia annua) and its active component arteannuan.

Traditional Chinese texts from the Qing Dynasty period indicate an awareness of the disease, suggesting that summer heat causes the red patches to appear because of an underlying heat toxin in the blood that is activated by the heat. In fact, it could be that the sunlight (a natural and strong ultraviolet source) is the primary trigger, rather than heat. Herbs that clear heat and toxin, nourish yin (to control heat), or reduce the impact of damp-heat (associated with late-summer weather conditions) were recommended. The herbs and formulas for lupus were based on the treatments for warm diseases. Such formulas had been popularized by Wu Youxing and others as a response to numerous serious epidemic diseases that occurred toward the end of the Ming Dynasty period. Lupus, which often presented with fever as well as reddened skin, was considered one of the warm diseases.

Chinese medical journals have relayed information about lupus treatment throughout the 20th Century and it remains a subject of intense interest. In most cases, lupus is treated in China with corticosteroids; in addition, herbal therapies are frequently employed as an adjunct to steroids. The modern Chinese literature focuses on two primary means of treating lupus with herbs: using antitoxin herbs (usually in conjunction with herbs that vitalize blood circulation) and using ching-hao or its active components.

Because the Chinese medical literature on lupus is so extensive, only sample information from recent clinical trials will be presented here to illustrate the practices that have evolved after several decades of experience. Because it is difficult to interpret clinical results with lupus treatments due to the high variability of the disease manifestation in each person over time, only the details of the treatment methods and some laboratory measurements will be relayed here. In all cases, the study authors determined that the patients who were treated with herbs plus prednisone responded better than those who were treated with prednisone alone (e.g., quicker response time, more complete resolution of symptoms, less prednisone required so fewer side effects). The basic treatment time in each case is 3 months, which would often be repeated for a total of six months treatment duration.

Dr. Pedro Choy was speaking on a TV programme with another two persons,I don´t know who they,but from their words,I can feel that they don´t know anything about Chinese Medicine,they don´t like Chinese Medicine and they also believe there is no study about how acupuncture work on our body.

In China,we have a saying:Don´t play music to a cow.It means don´t speak with someone that don´t know your work.Another saying is from Confius:If you know,tell me what you really know,don´t pretend that you know everything;if you don´t know,close your mouth,don´t pretend you know.

It´s a pity that always happens something on the opposite side.There are always some people who doesn´t know anything about acupuncture (TCM) ,but they speak as they know very well about it,they deny it,they laugh at it...in their mind:acupuncture (TCM) is nothing,western medicine is the No. 1.

Another sad thing is from someone of acupuncturist,they studied acupuncture one or two or more years in Portugal or France or China,then they think they know everything about TCM,they ask those clients call them Master ou Professor,they promise they can treat all the diseases,they think they are the god.

My friend,do you know Chinese Medicine is the essence of Chinese Culture?Do you know there are many famos TCM doctors only know how to really use one formula in whole of their life?Do you know why formula F47 call Bai Hu Tang (White tiger decotion)?Do you know why formula F43 (Xiao Chai Hu Tang) only have 7 herbs (7 is the number of wood)? Do you know point E36 Zusanli (Foot three Li),here three is not only means three cun?...

I always heard someone said Chinese Medicine is so simple, they change a classic formula as they want,then they put a new name to the formula and tell the other people that is his study achivements...,if TCM is really so easy,why in the history of TCM only few of those doctors became really famos in China?

Normalmente,quando um portugûes está a pensar na Fitoterapia Chinesa (Ervas Chinesas),é facilmente chegar um resultado:as plantas nâo tem CE qualificação.
Uma coisa muito simple:as plantas podem causar morto.
Na China,customamos dizer:o segredo de Medicina Tradicional Chinesa é quantidade das ervas.
o quê quer dizer é escolher a quantidade certa para doença.
Não diga as ervas chinesas podem matar as pessoas,so pensa assim,e os medicamentos ocidentais,não Matar?
Quase todos os manuais dos comprimidos sempre mostram os efeitos segundos,e sempre está sugerir uma quantidade,mesmo assim,está sempre fazer má as pessoas.
Quem tenha medo das ervas chinesas,porque não tem medo dos comprimidos.Mesmo um comprimido para dormir,se tomasse mais que poder,morte logo.
Se um Medico de Medicina Tradicional Chinesa conseguir controlar bem as quantidades das ervas chinesas,não há problema de usa-lás.

De facto,isso significa o atitude das pessoas quando está enfrentar medicinas altertivas,como:
acupuntura,aromaterapia,arte terapia,auriculoterapia,ayurveda,biodança,bioenergologia,cromoterapia,fitoterapia
florais de Bach,homeopatia,iridologia,magnetoterapia,quiropraxia,reflexologia,tratamento espiritual,medicina ortomolecular,Reiki...
Cada tipo de medicina (ou Tratamento) tem a sua vantagem...

HEPATITE e Acupunctura

According to western medicine,there are many types of hepatitis,such as Hepatitis A,Hepatitis B,Hepatitis C...,in China,the more common one is Hepatitis B.
In the TCM history,we almost never use the word ´´Hepatitis´´ to name this disease,instead of hepetitis,we use Jaundice Syndrome (To be exact,Zheng) to speak about this disease,and the three tipycal type are:Yin Jaundice,Yang Jaundice and Acute Jaundice,and there many famos formula for this Zheng:Yin Chen Hao Tang(Yang Jaundice),Yin Chen Zu Fu tang (Yin Jaundice),Qian Jin Xi Huang San(Acute Jaundice)...we also use formulas like Cai Hu Su Gan San,Long Dan Xie Gan Tang and so on to different sydrome.

Jaundice has normally three common symptoms:Yellow urine,yellow skin and yellow eyes.Yang Jaudice manifest as the color of ´´Laranja´´,Yin Jaudice manifest as the fiambre color (Dark Yellow),and the acute Jaundice,more refer to the time,all body become brilliant yellow in very short time.of course ,there are more symptoms we can find to difer this three syndroms.

About the points,here is some suggestion:
Zhi Yang(Du 9),Dan su(B19),Gan su (B18),Yang Lin quan(G34),Zu San Li
For Yang Jaundice,add:Da Zhui(Du14),Qu Chi(LI11),Wai Guan(Sj5)
For Yin Jaundice,add:Yin Ling quan(sp 9),San Yin Jiao(sp6),Zhong wan(Ren 12)and Guan Yuan.
For Acute Jaudice:Da Zhui (Du14) and Qu Chin(Li11) bleeding,or use the Shi Xuan(Extra 24).

Medicina Tradicional Chinesa É FACIL?!

Não estou a contrar a ninguem,só queria contar um pouco sobre MTC.
Um cliente meu,idosa,depois de contar tudo,como habitual,eu perguntei a Sra:já fez acupunctura?Sra respondeu:não,mas a minha cunhada fez em Lisboa,e o medico dela diss que curou um cancro com acupunctura!
Eu fiquei lá um pouco asustado,mas nao disse mais nada.Que pena aquele medico nao ganhou O premio Nobel de Medicina.
Em coimbra,perto da Universidade de Coimbra,la ha um centro de varias consultas:acupunctura,shiatse,Reikei,qi gong,Tuina,Taijiquan,...muito mais especialidede, quase faz tudo que Deus faz.na Altura,Vi a Consulta de Fengshui,por isso,entrei e perguntei ao funcionario:Sr. Dr. tambem dá consulta de Fengshui?Onde Dr. tirou o curso? O funcionario era muito amigo:Nosso Dr. foi a Lisboa duas fins-de-semana e tirou o curso com um mestro!
Milagre!Magia!Fantastico!O meu portugues nao chega para dizer tudo!
Na China,tirar um curso de MTC é um estudo muito pesado,temos que estudar nao só as cadeiras de MTC,tambem as cadeiras de Medicina ocidental,cinco anos inteiro fica lá estudar,depois um ano de estagio,este ano nao temos direito de trabalhar sozinho nem passar uma erva para os doentes,no setimo ano,precisamos fazer um teste nacional:National Medical Exame.Este exame é dividido em duas parte.A parte Practico e Parte escrito.
Na parte Practico:precisa de mostrar alguns basico tecnica de MTC e Medicina Ocidental.E depois é um caso:Tem alguns sintomas,o que precisamos fazer:Nome de doença (Nome MTC,e Nome Medicina Ocidental), Syndrome,metodo de tratamento,Formula,quais sao o herbs neste formula e quantidade.Plano de Acupunctura e os pontos.
Se conseguir passar esta parte,pode tomar a segunda parte,normalmente,75% dos particpantes podem passar.
A segunda parte é mais dificil,é sobre tudo o que estudamos na Universidade,dois exames de MTC,dois exames de Medicina Ocidental. Normalmente entre 25% e 30% das pessoas podem passar.Isso significa se tiver 4 pessoas participam este National Medical Exame,So um Pode passar!So um pode começar a trabalhar como um medico de MTC.

Agora voltamos a ver o que está a passar em Portugal,Nao preciso de dizer mais nada,Pense nisso,os meus amigos.

Acupunctura e doenças como a esquizofrenia

Pathogenesis and Pathology:
1.Imbanlance of Yin and Yang:one famous saying of TCM is--Yin and Yang in equilibrium, mental disorder cured.
2.Endogenous infection of seven emotions.
3.Mental confusion due to phlegam (Tan).
4.Pathogenic fire subjugating the heart.
5.Stagnation of Qi and Blood.

Syndrome Dian:
1. Stagnation of phlegm-Qi:
Synptoms:mental depression,apathetic expression,reticent,dull-witted,or suspicious and over-anxious,subjeting to changing mood,speaking incoherently,ou muttering to oneself,loss of apetite,light tong proper,whitish and greasy fur,taut and slippery pulse.
Treating methods:soothing the liver,relieving stagnation,resloving phlegm and inducing resuscitation.
Formula:Xiao Yao San + Di Tan Tang.

2. Deficiency of qi and Accumulation of Phlegm
Symtoms:apathetic and indifferent expression,reticent even transfixed,staring like a fool,thinking aloud,lack of initiative,confused mind,presumption,reckless action,blame oneself,ou sallow complexion,loose stool,clear urine,light and enlarded tongue body,whitish and greasy fur,slippery ou weak and feeble pulse.
Treating method:supplementing qi,invigorating spleen,eliminating phlegm and inducing resuscitation.
Formula: Si Jun Zi Tang + Di Tan Tang.

3.Deficiency of both heart and spleen
symtoms:protracted course of disease,the illness developed slowly,pale complexion,sluggish,too lazy to speak,listlessness,absent-minded,palpitation,susceptible to fright and sorrow,presumption,distubance of thought,talk in a confused manner,demoralized,ou dreaminess,loss of apetite,loose stool,light tongue body,enlarged tongue with teeth prints,thin and whitish tongue coating,weak and feeble pulse.
Treating method:strengthening the spleen,replenishing qi,nourishing heart and tanquilizing mind.
Formula:Yang Xin Tang.

Syndrome Kuang:

1.Phlegm-fire disturbing heart:
symptoms:onset suddenly,impetuousness,headache,sleeplessness,staring angrily,flushed face and ears,suddenly mad and violent rage,enthusiasm running high,speaking disorderly,climbing walls and roofs,abnormally powerful,making racket and shout in confusion,not caring about various relations,or destroying things and harming other people,ascending a height and singing,throwing away clothing and running,loving cold drinks,contipation,dark urine,or day and night without sleep and eating .Strongly red tongue body,yellow and greasy coating,taut slippery or slipery,rapid and forceful pulse.
Treating method:Purging fire,eliminating phlegm,relieving palpitation and tranquilizing mind.
Formula:Xie Xin Tan + Meng shi Gun Tan Wan.

2.Hyperactivity of fire due to yin deficiency
Symptoms:illness conditions alleviated after protracted Sydrome Dian,be weary in mind,emotional instability,nervous,impatient,palpitation,frightened,restlessness,sleeplessness,dysphoria with feverish sensation in chest,palms and soles.or thin body shape,scanty dark urine,constipation,red tongue body,less or no fur,thready and rapid or taut thready pulse.
Treating method:nourishing yin and removing fire,tranquilizing mind.
Formule:Ding Zhi Wan + Er Yin Tang.

3.Stagnation and retention of blood and qi:
symtoms:dysphoria ,fury,talk much,even ascending a height and singing,running and taking of clothing, hallucination or dumbstruck,talk less,be in a confused state of mind,often with darkish complexion,stabbing pain and fullness feeling in chest and hypochondrium,palpitation,or abdomninal pain during the menstrual period in women,dark and clot in menstruation,or having injuries from falls,fractures,contusions and strains.Dark purple tongue body with ecchymosis,thin and whitish or thin yellow tongue coating,taut and thready or deep and taut pulse.
Treating method:promoting blood circulation,removing blood stasis,associated with activating the flow of qi.
Formule:Da Huang Zhe Chong wan + Dian Kuang Meng Xing Tang.

Acupuncture treatment:

Syndrome Dian:Shenmen (7 heart),Daling (7 Pericadium), Yin Tang,Tan Zhong (17 Ren Mai),Fenglong (40 Stomach),San Yin Jiao(6 Spleen),Zusanli (36 Stomach),Neiguan (6 Pc),DaZhui (14 Du Mai).

Syndrome Kuang;Lao gong(Pc ,Ren Zhong (GV 26),ShangWan (13 Ren Mai),Dazhong (4 Kidney),Jiu Wei (15 Ren Mai),Jian Shi (PC5),Feng Long(st 40)

These two group of acupoints are the basic ones for the treating,you also could put Heart Shu,Liver Shu,Spleen Shu and so on according to the case.
